The new price target is based on sales of a 30-year-old brand of arthritis pain reliever,, said the maker of Merck & Co in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, which is owned by Pfizer Inc and the company it plans to make its heartburn drug in December.
Celebrex, which will be available from May 1, will cost $50 a month, or about $3.20 a month, for a pack of 28 pills. The price of Celebrex in the United States will also depend on how much the generic drug maker costs.
But Merck said it is cutting its direct-to-consumer advertising campaign from Monday. "If we had a campaign that emphasized Celebrex, we would have had the opportunity to lower the price," it said in a statement. "It's just that the prices will continue to be high."
The maker of Celebrex, which was set to receive a final price of $50 a month in January, said it will "continue to market the product to U. S. customers who have an opportunity to save money on their Celebrex costs."
The company said the price target is based on sales of a 30-year-old brand of arthritis pain reliever,, and will apply to sales of its own older and more expensive generic drug, or CELEBREX, in the United States and other countries.
Last week, the European Union and the United States made a joint statement arguing that generic drugs cost companies nothing and are free of price control.
Generic drugs, which are also known as drugs for pain and inflammation, can be sold at a much higher price than their brand-name counterparts. That's why Pfizer, which makes Celebrex, said it was in the process of selling its drug in the United States for $9 per pill.
The company said it had previously said it would appeal to drugmakers who wanted to lower the prices of drugs in the United States and other countries for which generic drugs cost the same.
But Merck, which makes Celebrex, said its appeal was "to find a price that is appropriate and affordable for consumers in the United States."
In addition, it said Merck would pay $2 a pill for a pack of 14 pills.
The new prices are expected to reflect the increased competition in generic drug markets, which includes prescription drugs, and other drugs in the United States.
Pfizer, which makes Celebrex, said in a statement that it had launched a consumer advertising campaign to increase its sales.
"Celebrex is an excellent product," Pfizer's Chief Executive Officer Andrew Witty said in a statement. "We have the best marketing strategy in the industry and we have made the right choice."
The company said that from July 1, when it will launch its own generic drug, to September 15, when it will begin selling its own version, it will take its total sales to $9.05 million. It said it will pay $3.20 to $3.25 a month to its patients who have used Celebrex.
The company said that it is committed to reducing the costs of generic drugs and will continue to work closely with Pfizer and other companies to ensure that they do not cost the same for themselves or elsewhere.
In February, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists said it would work with other healthcare systems to develop a generic version of Celebrex.
In the meantime, Merck said its drug sales will be distributed to U. consumers. That's because the drug is being sold only in the United States.
